On page 66: Why Francisco’s father is so rude, instead of being kind and glad that Francisco is back for a while? The father’s character have something to do with the past? Why he is not a normal father? Why so much bitterness in his heart?

Page 67.Did Francisco purposely mention that he was going to work at dawn to please his father and ease tension between them ?

This is definitely debatable- but not necessarily important. What bigger issue, regarding Francisco and his father, are you trying to get at here? Work ethic? How the father never seems satisfied? declined.

Knowing that his father wasn’t so pleased about him leaving to college, does francisco use the summer he has off from school to prove to his father that college hasn’t changed him ?

I don’t think Frankie’s father will ever change. He was so much nicer before, and i don’t think he’ll ever change. Hes so tense now and hes rude, and ignorant. For example on page 66 Panchito says: “Papa, did you know that the word naiden should really be nadie? This is was a Spanish professor told me.” And his fathers response was “!Que diablos! Are you correcting me?”, i thought that was ignorant. Even if his son is the first person in the family to graduate hell still be in his “pissed off” mood.

On page 53 Frank lost his temper and spoke harshly to Smokey, Frank never lost his temper even at home. Why did Frank lose his temper only on Smokey if he had controlled his emotions throughout his time at home?

On page 48 he talks about how he came he had to cross the border and sneak through, What was the main reason his family came to the united states and why would his dad put his kids in danger, meaning that he told them to watch out for the guys in the green uniform. Why would he do that to his kids? Was he being selfish?

Approved. But leave off “Was he being selfish?” Too leading.

on page 48 francisco has always been afraid of people in green uniforms due to his past; since he joined the rotc program in college is his feelings the same as before when he was young to people in green uniforms.

You have the start of a debatable question here in a claim. Can you convert this to a question?

on page 52-53 Francisco mentions how Smokey is so into reading about sports and how they always argue over his dislike of sports. Since the school spirit is all about sports, will that become a problem to Francisco being a student in that school?

On page 65 says ” I knew how he felt about my leaving home. He did not like for our family to be apart”
If a father wants the best for his son, why does he’s being rude with him? Why he is mad about the fact that Francisco is leaving to college? If he wants his family to stay together, why he don’t try to handle the situation?

on page 66 Francisco’s father acts in a mean way toward him. Did he react that way because he thinks that Francisco had forgotten about them during the time he had been in college and now he visits them like nothing? (is that what Francisco’s father thinks)

On page 55 when Smokey and his friends were teasing Francisco for never drinking alcohol before. If that was how Francisco’s then he shouldn’t be judged. Why would they all pressure Francisco to drink, just because he said he’s never drank before?

    • mrsfabian
      Posted October 31, 2011 at 5:38 PM | #

I think I understand your question? Please reread it and make the needed edits. If you make the question more open minded, like should Francisco’s friends pressure him to join their school culture and drink- then the question will be more debatable. It’s sort of obvious you think it’s wrong to pressure him. Declined.

on page 57 “my heart was pounding and my head felt like it was in a vise.I took four aspirins and crawled back into bed. then I remembered what had happened the night before and felt ashamed.” why was Francisco ashamed because he had drinked with his friends?

Brian, perhaps even more interesting is what was the author’s point of including it? If you can rewrite the question to not just include why he confused them, but why he wrote it (what is he saying about himself at that age) I’ll approve it. For now, declined.
