Reaching Out: Approved Vocabulary Pool

Here we have posted student created and approved vocabulary definitions from Reaching Out. If you did not get the required 15 words approved, you can take needed words from the pool. Just make sure it’s a word you were actually curious about that you did not know.

1. ) Anixety

“immediately , my anixety returned” pg 37

Distress of mind caused by fear

 

2.) expository

“in this course you’ll be writing expository, argrumentative , persuasive , descriptive , and narrative essay “, he said, taking a puff and placing his cigarette on a tarnished and chipped ashtray.” pg 38

the systematic explanation of a subject

 

3). mimeographed

” I took out the mimeographed essay and began reading it ” . pg 39

 

4.) apprennsive

“and even though we came back iegally i continued to feel apprennsive everytime i saw a green uniform . ” pg 48

uneasy or fearful about something that might happen.

 

5) Discourage

pg 46 ” I often did this, especially when i felt discourage”

showing disapproval, or making something more difficult.

 

6) torrential

pg 57 ” There was thunder and lighting and torrenrtail rain.”

When it rain’s really hard.

 

7) Anthropological

pg 80) “i had never herd of an anthropological linguist before.”

Learning about races,  origins, and cultures.

 

8) Compliance

pg 51 “If anything was out of compliance, we got demerits, which effected our grade.”

Out of order, not correct.

 

9) Dynamo

pg 29 “He was like a giant dynamo”

An extremely energetic, hyper person.

 

10) buttressed

pg 14 “I buttressed the box on my knee and balanced in with my left hand while i unlocked the door.”

11) Lobbed

pg 19 ” I love playing sports , he lobbed the football back and forth between his hands and tossed it into the air and caught it.”To throw a ball a long distance

 

12) Gyrated

pg 62 ” The lead singer jumped around the stage and gyrated.”

To move quickly in a circular motion dancing usually in a dirty way

 

13) Feigned

pg 65 ” He caught my eye and feigned a smile ”

To fake an action

 

14.) Stoop: to bend down

” Ever since he had hurt his back form doing stoop labor for many years and could no longer work in the fields, his temper had gotten worse.”  pg-3

 

15). Barrack: a crappy, large temporary building usually made for soldiers.

“From the corner of my eye i saw my father sitting on the front steps to our barrack”

 

16.) Lieu: Instead of

” This essay in lieu of the paper you normally turn into me this Friday” pg43

 

17.)Boasting: talking with pride

” I did not know anything about Stanford, but he sounded like he was boasting.” pg63

 

18.)Disoriented: Confusion (location or drunk wise)

” I woke up three hours later exhausted and disorient ” Pg. 28

 

19.)Quavered:tremble

Is he hurt? Roberto’s voice quavered Pg.88

 

20.) Murky: dark and dim

As I struggle to keep my head above the murky water.

 

21.)Tapestry:  heavy cloth

Behind her on the wall hung a floral tapestry with shades.

 

22.)Hobbled: limp

He hobbled back to his office.

 

23.)Naval: belly botton

“cried so much that he said he had rupted his naval”

 

24.) Disheveled: not neat

“he was as pale as a white sheet of paper and had dark circles under his eyes and disheveled hair.”

 

25.)Embedded: to set something firmly

“those images became embedded in my mind.”

 

26.) mortuary:a funeral home
